- SALIX ARBUSCULA (Weeping Willow, Dwarf)
- Height: 32in (80cm)
- Aftercare: A fine specimen tree producing white-haired yellow catkins. Most suitable for patio or rock gardens. Grow in full sun.
- SANGUISORBA OBUSTA
- Flowering time: spring
- Height: 2ft (60cm); spread,2ft (60cm)
- Aftercare: Grow in moderately fertile, well-drained soil that does not dry out. Full sun or partial shade. Fully hardy.
- SCABIOSA BUTTERFLY
- Height: 10-12in (25-30cm); spread 32-40in (80-100cm)
- Aftercare: Fully hardy to frost hardy. Grow in moderately fertile, well-drained soil in full sun. Deadhead to prolong flowering.
- SCAEVOLA
- Flowering time: June to October
- Aftercare: Plant in a hanging basket or tub using a good quality potting compost. Keep well watered, do not allow compost to dry out. Give occasional feed of liquid fertiliser.
- SEA HOLLY
- Flowering time: July to September
- Height: 12-18in (30-45cm)
- Aftercare: Plant 12 inches (30cm) apart in a well-drained soil in a sunny position. May need support if exposed to wind. Cut stems to ground level after flowering.
- SESLERIA
- Height: 16in (40cm)
- Aftercare: Fully hardy. Grow in moderately fertile, well drained, neutral to slightly alkaline soil in full sun or light dappled shade.
- SMOKE BUSH
- Height: 10ft (3m)
- Aftercare: Coloured foliage in Autumn. Requires a sunny position, will grow in any well drained garden soil. Do not plant in well manured soil as plant will not assume coloured foliage.
- SOLANUM RANTONNETTI
- Flowering time: summer and autumn
- Height: 3-6 ft (1-2m); spread 3-6ft (1-2m)
- Aftercare: Grows in moderately moist but well-drained soil in full sun. Support plants and tie in young shoots regularly.
- SPARAXIS (Harlequin Flowers)
- Flowering time: June to July
- Height: 10in (15cm)
- Aftercare: These may be planted 2 inches (5cm) deep and 2 inches (5cm) apart in any good garden soil, but they need a sunny, sheltered position. Water well during dry spells.
- SPIRAEA (Vanhouttei)
- Flowering time: early summer
- Height: 6ft (2m); spread, 5ft (1.5m)
- Aftercare: Will grow well in any fertile soil, but require an open position with good drainage. Soak the roots for 2-3 hours prior to planting. Spread the roots out carefully and plant firmly. When planting is complete, water well and continue watering for a few days if the weather is dry. Plant 2.5ft apart. Prune annually after flowering.
- STANDARD SWISS WILLOW (Salix Helvetica)
- Flowering time: from early spring
- Height: approximately 28in (70cm)
- Aftercare: Produce 2 inch (5cm) long, silvery catkins against silvery grey foliage. Can be grown in the garden or in a pot.
- STANDARD VIBURNUM TINUS
- Aftercare: Grows in any moderately fertile moist, but well-drained soil in full sun or partial shade. Shelter evergreens from cold, drying winds.
- STOKESIA
- Flowering time: from midsummer to early autumn
- Height: approximately 2ft (60cm)
- Aftercare: Grow in light, fertile, moist but well-drained soil in full sun. Liable to rot in damp heavy soils. Provide twiggy support. Deadhead to prolong flowering period. Provide a deep dry mulch in areas with severe winters.
- STRAWBERRIES
- Aftercare: Select an open position. Prepare the ground thoroughly by digging to a depth of 24 inches (60cm), adding plenty of manure. Plant immediately upon arrival, 18 inches (45cm) apart in rows 30 inches (75cm) apart. Spread the roots out carefully. The crown of the young plants should not be buried, nor placed too high out of the ground. Water frequently, particularly in dry weather. Put straw down under the leaves at fruiting time. Mulch annually in February with manure or compost. Replace the whole bed every 3 or 4 years.
- SUPER-PLUGS
- Aftercare: Superplugs are plants growing in their own soil, well rooted and ready for planting into their permanent positions. Simply dig a hole larger than the plug, making sure the soil is well worked and easy to use. Place plug in hole, fill in the loose soil, firm and water well. Continue watering until the plants are well established. These are also suitable for growing in hanging baskets, patio tubs and window boxes. Polyanthus will flower from February to May, Pansies start flowering in winter and come into full bloom late winter and spring.
- SYRINGA (Grafted Lilac)
- Aftercare: Grow in fertile, humus rich, well-drained neutral to alkaline soil in full sun. Mulch regularly.
