- LAVATERA BARNSLEY
- Flowering time: throughout summer
- Height: 4ft (180cm)
- Aftercare: Is a fast growing semi-evergreen shrub with downy sage green leaves. Should be pruned hard in spring. Needs sun and good drainage.
- LAVATERA ROSEA
- Flowering time: July to October
- Height: 24in (60cm)
- Aftercare: Plant in ordinary garden soil, which is not too rich as this produces excessive foliage. Space 18 inches (45cm) apart in sun or partial shade. When growing do not disturb soil around plants.
- LEMON AND ORANGE TREES
- Aftercare: House and patio plant. Suitable for outdoor use from mid May till mid October. Keep frost free. Prefers a light and sunny spot. Fertilize regularly during blossoming and fruit bearing. Overwinter in a cool (4-12°) and light spot to stimulate budding. Trim shoots with fruitless buds. Repot each spring with potting soil deficient in lime (pH4.5).
- LEUCOCORYNE PURPUREA
- Flowering time: spring
- Height: 18in (45cm)
- Aftercare: Plant 4 inches (10cm) deep. Grow in moderately fertile, sharply drained soil in full sun.
- LIGULARIA PALMATILOBA
- Height: 40in (1m)
- Aftercare: Grows in moderately fertile, well-drained soil in full sun with some midday shade. Shelter from strong winds.
- LILACS (SYRINGA)
- Flowering time: May to June.
- Height: 8ft (240cm); spread 5-8ft (150-240cm)
- Aftercare: Plant firmly in any ordinary garden soil, 8ft (240cm) apart, in full sun or partial shade. Once established they need no attention.
- LILIUMS
- Flowering time: June to September
- Height: 20-36in (50-90cm)
- Aftercare: Plant 5 inches (13cm) deep and 10 inches (25cm) apart in any reasonable soil, selecting a site that is sheltered from strong winds. With their heads in the sun and roots in the shade, they will flower freely year after year. As a pot plant, place bulbs singly in a 6 inch (15cm) diameter pot and keep in a dark, cool place to encourage root formation. When growth appears bring gradually into the light and let them grow in your living room or greenhouse.
- LILY - ARUM (Zantedeschia)
- Height: 2ft (60cm)
- Aftercare: Outdoors, grow in humus rich, moist soil in full sun. Protect from frost using a deep winter mulch. Indoors, grow in loam-based potting compost (John Innes No.2) in full light. In growth, water freely and apply a balanced liquid fertilizer every fortnight until the flowers have faded. Contact with sap may irritate the skin, whilst all parts may cause mild stomach upset if eaten.
- LILY OF THE VALLEY
- Flowering time: May
- Height: 8-10in (20-25cm)
- Aftercare: Grow in leafy, fertile, humus-rich, moist soil in full or partial shade. Top dress with leaf mould in autumn.
- LIRIOPE
- Height: 12in (30cm)
- Aftercare: Grow in light, moderately fertile, preferably acid, moist but well drained soil. Partial or full shade, sheltered from cold drying winds. Tolerant from drought.
- LITHODORA - See Lithospermum.
- LITHOSPERMUM
- Flowering time: May to October
- Height: 4-6in (10-15cm)
- Aftercare: Requires a sunny position in the garden. Ensure plenty of peat or well rotted compost is added to the soil when planting 12 inches apart (30cm).
- LONICERA
- Flowering time: May to June
- Height: 6-8ft (180-240cm); spread, 6-8ft (180-240cm)
- Aftercare: Will grow well in any fertile soil, but require an open position with good drainage. Soak the roots for 2-3 hours prior to planting. Spread the roots out carefully and plant firmly. Plant 3-4ft (90-120cm) apart. When planting is complete, water well and continue watering for a few days if the weather is dry.Thin overcrowded branches after flowering.
